Winter Welcoming Party 2025: A Warm Welcome to the Auckland Winter

This year’s winter season felt even warmer with the arrival of the Winter Welcoming Party 2025: Haere Mai, Whānau!, a welcoming event for Indonesian students arriving in Auckland. This event was the first to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between students from various campuses from the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Massey University, to the Media Design School, and even high school students!

The atmosphere was lively immediately with the fun and laughter-filled icebreaker “Find Three Things in Common”. Active participants also received gift vouchers from Java and Gong Cha, boosting their spirit and enthusiasm.

The event officially opened with Karakia (a traditional Māori opening prayer) and Indonesia Raya, followed by a speech from Prasetyo Putra, President of PPI Auckland for the 2025/2026, which introduced PPIA staff and an explanation of PPI Auckland’s Ambitions (visions), Actions (missions), and Creations (work programs).

The most anticipated moment came with a Sharing Session with Bang Conrad, a New Zealander married to an Indonesian who has served in the New Zealand military and police force. He shared inspiring stories about his journey through higher education while working, including important lessons about safety in Auckland, social etiquette, and adapting to local culture. Interestingly, Bang Conrad, who is also fluent in Indonesian, introduced participants to Māori culture, including a session on learning the haka, everyday Māori vocabulary, and the origins of the name “Tāmaki Makaurau” – the Māori name for Auckland.

The event concluded with a Q&A session about student life, including part-time opportunities and adaptation tips. One special highlight was introducing the PPIA Buddy program, where new members are accompanied by a peer (buddy) to help them settle in during their first year.

An exciting, familial, and inspiring start to a new adventure at Tāmaki Makaurau!
